Fortinet Inc (NASDAQ:FTNT) has announced the appointment of Derek Kan to its board of directors.

The company said Kan brings experience across technology businesses, AI deployment and governance of large-scale operations in both the public and private sectors.

Fortinet said the appointment strengthens its board with leadership experience in technology innovation and public policy.

Ken Xie, Fortinet’s founder, chairman of the board and chief executive, said Kan brings a combination of technology leadership, AI deployment experience and public-sector governance to the board.

Kan said cybersecurity sits at the intersection of technology, policy and national security, and added that he looks forward to working with Fortinet’s board and leadership team.

Kan most recently served as an executive at Shopify following the 2022 acquisition of Deliverr for $2.4 billion. He held vice president roles across global customer support, business operations and global marketing, and led enterprise-wide AI deployment across customer experience and operations.

He currently serves as an adviser to Shopify and as a senior adviser at Duration Capital. Fortinet said Kan has been nominated by three presidents and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on four separate occasions.

Earlier in his career, Kan served as deputy director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, where he managed the federal government’s more than $4 trillion budget. He also served as U.S. Under Secretary of Transportation, overseeing national transportation policy and regulatory frameworks for emerging technologies, including autonomous vehicles.

Kan has also served on the board of Amtrak and currently serves on the boards of Toll Brothers, Globe Life Insurance Inc and Oklo Inc. He is vice chairman of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors and holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he graduated as an Arjay Miller Scholar.
